Arrived in Jakarta

Here we are coming out of the airport in Jakarta at 2:00 am. We are tired but happy to be here. 24 hours aboard airplanes, 30 hours including transit time. We have a nice apartment on the 19th floor in Jakarta. We have been to the mission office and started to get to know our way around.

Family History in Central Java, Cool Places and New Friends

  This week we visited the cities of Solo and Jogja in Central Java to write a story for the Indonesian Newsroom about family history. Didiet Nugraha, standing on the far right, is the father of the two young people on the left, Dandy and Devara. He is standing in the palace in Solo pointing to his ancestor. Most people here do not have a family name for reasons dating back to colonial times. The fact that this family has the information to link them to royalty, just a few generations back, has resulted in many generations of geneology and hundreds of family names that they would not have otherwise. The man on the far right of this picture is Teguh Siswanto. He is also fired up about family history however, he is the more common case in Indonesia of having no family name and no written records other than the ones he has gathered by talking to living relatives. Mission Possible, Cebu Temple with the Elders

 This week we had the very special privilege of accompanying 10 Elders to the Cebu temple in the Philippines. Because of Covid restrictions they could not attend the temple until now. I’m telling you, these are fantastic young men, we just loved every minute of our time with them.  Standing in front of Magellan's cross in Cebu. This wooden cross commemorates that cross that Magellan placed in this location in 1521, which was the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines. There are two stories about the present cross. One says that this is a wood overlay of the original and that the original cross is inside. The other story is that the original was lost or destroyed and this is a replacement cross put up by the Spaniards.  Our Indonesian Elders love to sing and so do the Philippinos. Back in Jakarta

  This is the view out the window of our 25th floor apartment in Jakarta. Its good to be back in the Jakarta Indonesia mission again. We are quickly getting involved in the work here again. We have new leadership for the Indonesia Communication Council so it has been nice to get to know them and we will help to facilitate training. The "Light The World" Christmas campaign has started which probably won't require our direct involvement but we will help wherever we can. We are also planning some trips with our humanitarian missionaries so that we can make newsroom articles from the great work that is ongoing around the country. We will keep you posted as the exciting events of the next six months in Indonesia unfold. We recieved a visit from this wonderful couple who we have not met for many years.
